FAQs

We have answered the questions intended parents ask most, organised by topic so you can go straight to what matters to you.

Getting Started

What happens after I reach out?

Typically, the next step is a confidential initial conversation to understand your situation and answer your questions. There is no obligation to proceed with anything further.

Can you tell me which option is right for me?

We cannot recommend a specific medical or legal treatment path, but we can help you understand the options available to you. Working closely with our partner fertility clinics, legal professionals, and counsellors, we can guide you through the information so you feel supported in making the right decision for your individual circumstances.

I do not know what I need yet. Is it too early to reach out?

Not at all. Many people contact us long before they are ready to begin any treatment. An early conversation can help you understand your options and plan ahead.

Do I need a medical reason to use surrogacy services?

No. Surrogacy can be chosen for all kinds of medical, personal, or family-building reasons. We'd love to hear your journey and see how we can make this your next, best step.

How do I begin the process?

Email us at contact@newleaffertility.com or book a free, initial consultation. We’ll arrange a plan tailored to your needs.

Can I be a parent if I’m single?

Absolutely. We support intended parents of all backgrounds.

Surrogacy

Is a gestational carrier journey guaranteed to result in a baby?

No fertility treatment can guarantee a successful pregnancy or birth. This is one reason why all New Leaf packages include unlimited embryo transfers at no additional charge, removing the financial pressure of additional attempts. Your specialist will discuss success rates, potential risks, and treatment options based on your medical history.

How long does the process take?

From surrogate matching to birth, a surrogacy journey in Ghana typically spans 12 to 18 months. The timeframe varies depending on medical assessments, embryo availability, screening, matching, legal preparation, and treatment response. Your fertility team can provide a more personalised estimate after reviewing your circumstances.

Can single parents or same-sex couples work with a gestational carrier?

Eligibility and available treatment options depend on medical, ethical, and legal considerations. A confidential consultation can help you understand which options may be appropriate for your circumstances.

How do I find a gestational carrier in Ghana?

The safest approach is to work with a reputable surrogacy agency that can explain the medical, screening, counselling, and legal aspects of the process. At New Leaf, surrogate matching is included in all our packages and every carrier is independently screened before any match is made. Informal arrangements made without professional guidance carry significant legal and welfare risks and are not something we would recommend.

Is a gestational carrier genetically related to the baby?

No. A gestational carrier does not provide the egg and is therefore not genetically related to the baby. The embryo is created through IVF using the intended parents' or donors' genetic material.

Is Ghana a safe country to pursue surrogacy?

Yes. All medical, legal, and logistical steps are carefully managed with accredited clinics and hospitals.

Where will my surrogate deliver my child?

Births take place at accredited hospitals in Ghana with experienced medical teams.

Will I have contact with my surrogate?

We work with intended parents to ensure appropriate communication measures. To protect the privacy and wellbeing of both intended parents and surrogates, communication is generally handled through the agency.

How much money will I save if I don’t use an agency?

Independent journeys may save on agency fees, but require significant time, expertise, and coordination. It can become expensive and stressful to manage alone, especially if you choose to engage in surrogacy outside of your home country. Our full-service support ensures compliance, reduces stress, and improves the chance of a smooth, successful journey.

What is the difference between gestational surrogacy and traditional surrogacy?

Gestational surrogacy involves a surrogate carrying a baby conceived using the intended parents’ or donors’ egg and sperm, with no genetic connection to the surrogate. Traditional surrogacy uses the surrogate’s own egg. We support gestational surrogacy only.

Surrogate Welfare

What ongoing support do surrogates receive during the pregnancy?

Surrogates in our programme receive dedicated medical care throughout the pregnancy through our partner clinics, as well as counselling support from a qualified professional. Practical and logistical support is also coordinated by New Leaf where needed. We do not operate under a model where surrogate welfare is subordinated to speed or cost.

How is surrogate reimbursement structured?

Surrogate reimbursement covers time, care, and the associated costs of carrying a pregnancy on behalf of another family. All reimbursement amounts and payment schedules are agreed by all parties before the programme begins and set out in the surrogacy agreement. There are no informal or undocumented payments in our programme. We are happy to share our full surrogate welfare and reimbursement framework with prospective clients on request.

Do surrogates receive independent legal representation?

Yes. Every surrogate has independent legal representation throughout the contract process. This means her legal counsel is entirely separate from New Leaf and from the intended parents' legal team. Independent representation is what makes the surrogacy agreement genuinely informed and enforceable, and it is a non-negotiable part of how we operate.

How are surrogates selected and screened?

Every surrogate in our programme is independently screened before any match is made. Screening covers three areas: medical assessment including full health checks and reproductive history; psychological evaluation by a qualified mental health professional to assess emotional readiness and understanding of the process; and legal review to confirm informed consent and eligibility. A surrogate is only introduced to intended parents after she has cleared all three stages.

IVF and Fertility Treatment

Is IVF safe in Ghana?

Yes. Our clinic providers meet international standards and are led by experienced fertility specialists.

Do you offer donor egg and sperm programmes?

Yes. Anonymous donor options are available and fully coordinated by our clinic providers.

Can I do IVF locally and still use your surrogacy programme?

Yes. You can undergo IVF in your home country and transfer embryos into our Ghana programme for surrogacy or further fertility treatment.

What IVF services do you support?

We coordinate access to egg retrieval, embryo creation, ICSI, donor eggs and sperm, and embryo transfer with leading clinics in Ghana.

Costs and Payments

Why are your prices lower than US or UK programs?

Our program is based in Ghana, where medical costs and cost of living are significantly lower than in the US or UK. We're able to pass these savings directly to you while maintaining exceptional standards of care. Our clinic partners are internationally accredited, and all surrogates receive comprehensive support throughout the journey.

What does the agency fee cover?

The agency fee covers our comprehensive case management service, including your dedicated case manager, 24/7 support line, surrogate matching and screening, legal coordination, and all administrative oversight throughout your journey. It's the foundation that ensures your program runs smoothly from start to finish.

Can the payment schedule flex if my employer benefits require itemized billing?

Yes, we can work with you to provide detailed invoices that break down costs according to your employer's requirements. Many intended parents use fertility benefits, HSA/FSA funds, or require specific documentation for reimbursement—we're experienced in providing the paperwork you need. Reach out to discuss your specific situation.

What happens to my payments if the program is unsuccessful?

If the program doesn't result in a successful pregnancy, you won't pay milestone fees that haven't been reached. For example, if embryo transfer doesn't result in pregnancy, payments scheduled for weeks 12 and 22 would not be due. We can discuss your options for trying again or alternative next steps.

Are there any fees outside this schedule?

Surrogacy is by nature unpredictable, and depending on the specifics of your journey some additional costs may arise. Before you begin your programme with us, we share a full list of possible additional costs so you understand what could apply and why. Nothing is ever added without prior discussion and your agreement.

How do I pay (USD, GBP, methods, invoicing)?

We accept payments in USD, GBP, and EUR via bank transfer (wire). You'll receive detailed invoices for each milestone payment.

What's the refund or contingency policy?

Refund eligibility depends on which milestone has been reached. The agency fee is non-refundable once services begin, but if the program ends before later milestones (e.g., pregnancy confirmation, week 12), payments tied to those milestones will not be charged. We outline the full refund policy in your contract. Our Guarantee program offers the most protection against unsuccessful transfers.

How long is this pricing valid for?

Current pricing is locked in once you sign your contract. Prices listed on this page are valid for contracts signed before December 31, 2026. After that date, pricing may be adjusted to reflect changes in medical costs, surrogate compensation, or other program expenses. If you're considering starting your journey soon, we recommend booking a consultation to secure current rates.

How are payments structured?

Payment schedules are confirmed at consultation and structured around key programme milestones. All transfers are handled securely, and our payment framework is designed to give intended parents clarity and confidence at every stage. We do not ask for full payment upfront.

Are there costs that are not included in the package price?

Third-party legal fees for your home country, embassy and visa processing costs, gamete couriering where applicable, and any additional medical procedures outside the standard IVF protocol may sit outside the package price depending on your circumstances. These are always identified and communicated clearly before the programme begins, never presented as surprises mid-journey.

What is included in the package price?

All New Leaf packages include surrogate matching and compensation, access to our partner fertility clinic, medical and IVF treatment costs, and embryo transfers. Full package breakdowns are provided at consultation.

What can I expect to spend for surrogacy?

Costs depend on individual circumstances, such as the need for donor eggs and sperm. IVF is included, but non-standard arrangements or additional testing may incur additional charges. We outline these clearly before you begin your journey.

Legal and Documentation

Do I need a lawyer in my home country as well as in Ghana?

In most cases, yes. Ghanaian legal proceedings establish parentage under Ghanaian law. Your home country will typically require a separate process to formally recognise that parentage domestically. We strongly recommend engaging a family law specialist in your home country before embryo transfer, not after the birth, so that the full chain of legal steps is understood and planned from the outset.

How does Ghanaian parentage documentation interact with my home country's requirements?

The parentage documentation you leave Ghana with, including the pre-birth parental order and birth certificate, forms the basis of legal recognition proceedings in your home country. Requirements vary by jurisdiction. United Kingdom-based intended parents must apply for a Parental Order from a UK court after returning home, for which the Ghanaian documentation is key evidence. Intended parents from the United States, European Union member states, Australia, and other jurisdictions each face different processes. We provide guidance on home-country requirements as part of our Complete and Concierge packages, and connect clients with specialist immigration and family law professionals where needed.

What is a pre-birth parental order and do I need one?

A pre-birth parental order is a court order, available under Ghana's Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 2020, that formally names the intended parents as the child's legal parents before the birth takes place. The application must be filed within 12 weeks of embryo transfer. If granted, the birth certificate is issued in the intended parents' names from the outset, providing legal security before your child is born. It is the strongest form of parental recognition available in Ghana and is included as a standard part of our legal coordination from the Complete Package onwards.

What does the legal process involve before and after birth?

Legal processes vary, but typically include pre-birth and post-birth contracts outlining parental rights and protections. You need to be ready to allow enough time for legal processes pre- and post-birth depending on the requirements of your home country. We can refer you to legal partners who can guide you throughout.

Egg Freezing

What happens if I decide not to use my frozen eggs?

You may continue storage, choose to discard them, or explore donation options depending on your personal circumstances and the policies of the clinic where your eggs are stored. These options will be discussed with you at the point of freezing and remain your decision throughout.

What if I retrieve fewer eggs than expected?

Egg numbers vary depending on age and ovarian reserve. Even freezing a smaller number of eggs preserves future possibility, and additional cycles may be considered where appropriate. Your fertility specialist will discuss realistic expectations based on your individual assessment.

Is the egg retrieval procedure painful?

The procedure is performed under sedation, so you will not feel pain during it. Mild cramping afterward is common and typically resolves within a day or two.

Can I freeze my eggs if treatment needs to start soon?

In many cases, yes. The egg freezing process usually takes two to three weeks, and our clinic partners are experienced in working within urgent medical timelines. Contact us as early as possible so we can coordinate accordingly.

How is medical egg freezing different from elective egg freezing?

Medical egg freezing is undertaken due to a health condition or medical treatment that may impact fertility, such as a cancer diagnosis requiring chemotherapy. Elective egg freezing is typically pursued for personal timing reasons, where someone wishes to preserve their fertility options for the future.
